T.C. Luoma’s memory is a bit shoddy

Recently, a T-Nation forum member found a blog post of mine, where I had used/republished some Bill Roberts quotes (Pre-Biotest Employment), where he had slammed both T-Nation and Biotest. Here are the quotes (with times and dates, as they appeared in  my original blog post, so you can look them up on Misc.Fitness.Weights):

4/20/99
Bill Roberts wrote on MFW (misc.fitness.weights):  ”Fuck TC and his outfit of lying clowns!”

3/25/99
Bill Roberts: The outfit is
just so blatantly dedicated to “advertorials”
for their own products, it is truly disgusting”.

3/28/99
Bill Roberts: If TC has a degree in microbiology, it is to the
undying shame of the degree-granting
institution.  This may have been a cereal company — it seems a distinct possibility.  Wonder how many box-tops
he needed?”

3/20/99
Bill Roberts: ”Testosterone.net is not dedicated to
providing steroid information.  It is
dedicated to hawking its own line of supplements. (Just in case you had
not noticed the patently-obvious)”.

3/24/99
Bill Roberts: ”I certainly don’t regret my decision
to inform them that I would never write for them, at any rate of pay.
Ever!”.

This first quote (the clown one) can be found in the Game of Shadows, and is attributed to Bill Roberts in that book as well.  Here’s what T.C. Luoma, the Editor-in-Chief of T-Nation, had to say about these quotes, as republished by yours truly:

Bill Roberts has been a member of our team for years. He works exclusively for us and has played a big part in many of our formulations.

So consider that when judging the veracity of the alleged quote.

Anthony Roberts wrote a couple of articles for us, but I stopped using them.

(Do a little research on him and you’ll figure out why.)

Interestingly, Anthony asked me for a favor a few months ago. Can’t remember exactly what it was, but it was something like writing a plug for his book or something.

I refused, so that might be part of the reason he’s posting stuff like this.

I think T.C.’s memory might not be entirely accurate, so I’d like to take this opportunity to refresh it…first of all, the quotes I have used, from Bill Roberts, were all posted by him on Misc.Fitness.Weights. Anyone can go look them up and see that they’re accurate, and he did in fact say all of them. As I said, I’ve included times and dates, so you can check it out for yourself.

The favor I asked T.C. for “a few months ago” (closer to a year, I believe) was actually information. I wanted to know if he remembered the name of the nutritional company that spiked their weight loss capsules with an amphetamine – it’s a really interesting story, because they actually coated the gelcap’s outside with an amphetamine, so when the FDA tested the contents of the capsules, they came up clean. I didn’t ask T.C. to write a plug for my upcoming book – I think he’s simply mistaken on this point, although it could be termed a favor for the book. At least I don’t recall asking him for a plug…

Additionally, I stopped writing for T-Nation because I began designing products for one of their competitors (Protein Factory). T.C. had an article on deck from me (Women and Steroids), and was about to run it, but I asked him not to. Instead, I gave it for free to Millard Baker, to use on MesoRx. You can easily go check out the thread for the last article I ever wrote for T-Nation, and see that T.C. approves the upcoming Women/AAS article in there. He didn’t run it because I asked him not to. I then stopped submitting articles for T-Nation, which technically could be “I stopped using him” as T.C. states, but that would be a very misleading way to say “He decided to stop writing for us, and withdrew an article we had on deck to be published.”

Like I said, I don’t think T.C. is lying, but I do think his memory is a bit off on this one. I’ve got no hard feelings towards Biotest, I just call ‘em how I see ‘em, and I think if you read the original blog post in question, you’ll agree that I’m not out of line on this one. But please don’t take my word for it, click all the links (and yes, this means you too, T.C. – I know you’re going to read this), and make your own decision…

His memory might be shoddy, but he’s still sexy as hell in his old age.

(**Update: Bill Roberts stood up and was held accountable for his words, and admitted that he, in fact, attacked Biotest, T.C., and T-Nation prior to getting on their payroll, saying: “If nothing else, it’s a good practical example for all the young whippersnappers out there: intemperate foolishness put onto the Internet will remain there forever! :)- puts an interesting spin on T.C.’s previous statement that people should consider who I am before  “judging the veracity of the alleged quote“)
