More on the Operation Roid Runner arrests

As biased as this may sound, whenever there is a major steroid bust (and I can find the names of the people who were arrested), I typically google their names along with the words “Bodybuilding” and “Nutrition” and a bunch of other terms. Why? Because bodybuilders are responsible for most of the steroid dealing that goes on in this country, and people in the nutritional industry are well-positioned to distribute steroids, for a variety of reasons that I don’t need to get into for the purposes of this post. That sounds kind of biased at first, but it’s true. Bodybuilders were using steroids before almost any other athletes in the world (except weightlifters) and they remain the connect between the athletic community and the steroid world. I could belabor the point a bit and start breaking down the last five major busts in the United States and show the connection between bodybuilding and steroids (or point to a ton of bodybuilding sites that are really just steroid sites) but I’m sure if you’re reading my blog you’ve heard it all before, and I don’t need to continue ramming this point down your throats.

ANYWAY, I looked up some of the people from Operation Roid Runner…and found exactly what I was looking for…some people who work in the nutritional industry, some bodybuilders, etc…

In this most recent bust, Stacy Garonzik, an NPC bodybuilder who has competed at the national level 4x, placing 7th twice, was charged with one count of delivery of steroids, one count of possession with intent to deliver steroids, one count of dealing in proceeds of unlawful activity and one count of criminal conspiracy.

Her husband is a far more interesting case, however. Eric A. Garonzik is a bodybuilder and ex-police officer who was fined a hundred dollars and given 12 months of probation, in 1997, for sexually assaulting a prostitute (logically, he ought to have simply paid her the $100). A few years after the prostitute incident, his former girlfriend charged him with sexual assault after she broke up with him. She also claimed that she suspected that he was a drug user.

Then in 2003, he was charged with making terroristic threats  (he threatened to blow up his ex-wife’s home and vehicle). He pleaded no contest to disorderly conduct in 2004. Now, he’s is charged with one count of delivery of steroids, one count of possession with intent to deliver steroids, one count of dealing in proceeds of unlawful activity and one count of criminal conspiracy.
